How to Prep Your Kids for the Holidays

The holidays are here, and it’s easy for kids to get caught up in the magic of fun presents, Santa Clause, extra snacks, and a break from school. With the change in the daily routine, it’s much more likely for kids to get a little carried away during the holiday season. In today’s blog from Cy-Fair Montessori in Houston, we’ll go over a few tips to prep your kids for the exciting holiday season so that they can enjoy the magic without being overwhelmed.

Getting & Giving Gifts

It’s no secret that kids of all ages love getting gifts during the holidays. However, this is an important time to teach them that giving presents can be just as beneficial and rewarding as receiving presents. Let your kids play an active role in picking out gifts for their siblings or other family members. This is also a good opportunity to do some volunteering, giving to local toy drives, or letting your children choose a charity where, as a family, you can make a donation.

Stick to Your Routines

Many kids find daily routines comforting because they know what to expect on a day-to-day basis. During the holidays while school is out, it can be hard to keep up with your normal daily routine, and it can cause added stress not only in your life but in your child’s life as well. Do your best to keep as many things constant as possible, like snack time, naps if applicable, and their bedtime routine.

Keep Them Involved

As we enter into the holiday season, there is a lot of extra work to be done around the house. From hanging decorations and lights both inside and out, to putting up the Christmas tree, baking Christmas cookies and other treats, and wrapping presents, it’s easy to go into work mode and forget that your kids can help! By including your kids in these festive activities, you can help them feel included, important, and better yet, keep them off of their tablets or away from the TV for an extended period of time.

Have Fun

When it all comes down to it, the holidays are about spending time with your family and loved ones, kids included. Have fun, play games, and enjoy your quality time together before the holiday break is over and life resumes as normal. You and your kids can make memories that last a lifetime during the holidays.
